So you've found a candle that you really liked, and you want to make sure you take care of it, so it lasts. You don't want to just set it down and light it immediately. There is a checklist you must go over if you want an optimal candle-burning experience.
The first time you light you candle is actually the most important burn. Make sure you allow the wax to melt right to the edges of the container. This will help you get a even burn for the duration of the life of the candle.
If you don’t want those smoky stains that end up making a candle glass look unappealing, you have to learn wick trimming. Take a ruler and a nail cutter to trim the wick to about ¼ inch (about 5-6mm). This won’t just help your candle maintain a cleaner burn, but it will burn brighter too. If you candle container starts to get darkened edges it can mean that you need to trim your wick. Wait until the wax is cold before trimming.
This should be obvious but, when you light your new candle, make sure it’s far away from any potential drafts such as tower fans, air conditioning vents, ceiling fans, or an open window. Not only will you decrease your burn time putting your candle near a draft, but you’re putting your home or personal space at risk of a fire.
How far down should you burn your candle? You should never let your candle burn all the way to the glass. We recommend that once the wax is 1/2 inch from the bottom you need to discard your candle. This will prevent extreme heat to the container and possible damage to the surface the candle is sitting on. Also damage or cracking of the glass can occur.
Speaking of fire risks, make sure your new candle is far out of children's reach and never leave them unattended. If you have a cat, dog, or other animals, make sure the candle is not in an area where they can jump on. Keep your candle about a foot (24 inches or 60 cm) away from any other objects, especially if they're flammable. If you insist on using a candle holder, make sure it's sturdy enough to not get easily knocked over.
Remember, never leave a candle unattended. If you're there with the candle for the recommended burn time duration, then extinguish it in the safest way possible after maximum of about 3-4 hours. Don't relight it right away; wait for the wick and the wax to cool down.
Don’t light a candle with anything other than a longer match than the standard matches. If you’re using a lighter, make sure it’s a long-reach lighter and not one you would use for cigarettes. Make sure you also don’t have any hair or loose clothing in the way when you’re lighting the flame.
You should always use a candle snuffer. Using a candle snuffer helps keep the wick in place and prevents wax from spilling as you blow into it. Never put out your candle with water as this can cause the glass to crack.
When you take care of your candle, you’re taking care of yourself, and following these tips will help you get the most out of your experience.
